The Ranger Service

- Who we are, what we do...

.. and how we can help you.

If you are a hill walker needing to discuss your route, a family wanting to picnic or an educational group hoping to arrange a visit - we are here to help.

Use the links below, send us an email, call or pop in for a visit. We look forward to hearing from you.

Who we are - The Ranger 'team'

There are usually only two of us on duty at any time within the glen, but we are supported by Seasonal Rangers, Volunteers and Interns.

The Ranger Service is supported financially by the Cairngorms National Park Authority, with our work delivering many of the park's key aims.

Eric Baird, Head Ranger

As Head Ranger, I'm responsible for the day-to-day work of the Ranger Service: looking after our visitors, and taking care of the facilities.

When not so busy, I can plan our programme of activities: Health Walks, Hands-on Conservation days, educational visits, and events.

Jane Evans, Assistant Ranger

Jane returned to work in Glen Tanar in early 2024 and brings a varied skill set to the role having worked in education, safety and practical conservation.

Generally found outside on the waymarked trails speaking to visitors or taking care of the site, she has a keen interest in most things including moths, astronomy, outdoor swimming and environmental art.

Interested in joining us?

Our volunteers vary from people interested in conservation to retirees, people thinking about a career change and students looking for experience.  Along with our Practical Conservation Days, our volunteers and interns assist us in carrying out numerous conservation and visitor management tasks and we are hugely grateful for their efforts.

If you are interested in volunteering or looking for an internship to gain experience for future employment, we would be happy to hear from you.

Come to the woods, for here is rest, ...climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees.
